So You Want To Collect Gemstones
By Lee MacRae
Gemology is a term referring to the art, profession and science of evaluating and identifying gemstones from natural diamonds to loose gemstones. Many people take up gemology as a hobby. They become interested in making a collection of loose diamonds or loose gemstones. Some people even begin to visit different areas nearby to look for raw gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If this hobby interest you read along as this article discusses the different aspects of this hobby.
The very first step in starting the hobby of collecting gemstones the wise way is through the power of knowledge. By visiting a local library you can find everything you need to know that will make you an informed buyer.
The first criteria you need to evaluate is stone color. It is a fact that gemstones are the most intensely colored naturally occurring materials you can find. These materials are so related to their color that they've even had their names combined with associated colors. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones are valued much higher they closer they are to natural spectral colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. They are valued much less when they are lighter or darker than the natural color.
The cut of your gemstone is one of the most important traits in determining gemstone value. The stone has to be cut in a way that reflects light back to the viewer. A stone that has a poor cut will never be able to reflect light consistently. Color tone, saturation, and hue will never look consistent.
The next factor to look at is the clarity of the gemstone. This refers to the purity of the gemstone or the lack of internal inclusions, internal particles or spots within the crystal structure. Without a doubt, zero flaws would make the gemstone highly valuable.
Next comes weight and size. All gemstones [except for pearls and corals] are priced by the carat. A carat is equal to 0.2 grams. However you should know weight and size are not the same in gemstones. Density or specific gravity can vary in gemstones. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats, you will find a similar sized ruby or sapphire is 1.20 carats.
Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can be very rewarding hobby. And there is a wide range and variety in gemstones you can collect. You can collect gemstones like Hematite, Sugilite Natural moissanite and then try others. The choice and beauty and variety is almost endless. And if money is tight you can find gemstones for yourself instead of buying. For example in Pennsylvania you can find Amethyst, Almandite Garnet and Pyrope Garnet, Beryl, Sunstone and Moonstone.
