How To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Why collect loose gemstones you ask? Well for one thing gemstones are extremely beautiful. And like their more familiar cousin, natural diamonds, they can appreciate in value over time. Many hobbyists love to collect and show case the nearly 150 types of gemstones found today. Follow along as we discuss the hobby of loose gemstone collecting.

First off you need to learn all you can on the wide variety of stones available. You'll find it very helpful to know what exactly you're looking for so you buy the right items. Without the proper knowledge you can make costly mistakes.

Number one to look at is the color of the gem. Top grade gemstones exhibit colors similar to the purest spectral colors of yellow, blue, Violet, green, orange or red. Muted gemstone colors or are too dark are diminished in value.

Gemstone cut is very important and factors into appraisal of diamonds but gemstones as well. A precision cut will highlight the gemstone's color, diminish any inclusions, and highlight the proportions and symmetry of the stone. One excellent way to determine the excellence of the cut is to consider how consistent and well, it reflects the light throughout its surface. But if a gem is cut too shallow, most of this light were refracted away instead of reflecting inside. Gemstone color will be washed out.

Next up is the aspect of clarity. Clarity is the term that refers to internal flaws (inclusions) or the external blemishes of a stone being considered. Any large flaws you can usually see with your naked eye with others requiring a 10X magnification.

Gemstones are often categorized according to their size aspect because it is more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be of the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different prices as well. This factor comes from the difference of specific gravity or relative density depending upon the chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example with normal proportions is approximately 6.5 mm around. A comparable a brilliant ruby of the same proportions in size will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Collecting various gemstones can be very rewarding hobby. And there are so many different types when it comes to gemstones. You can start collecting gemstones like Malachite, Amethyst (cardinal gem) or Clinohumite for instance. The choice and beauty and variety is almost endless. And if money is tight you can find gemstones for yourself instead of buying. Take the example of the United States. In Maryland you can search for Beryl and Clam Pearl.

Everything changed in the "diamond world" when diamond stones started being
discovered outside of India. First, there was Borneo and then somewhere along
the line Brazil and China joined the fray. Then the glittering light of the
diamond appeared in South Africa. It happened in the 19th century. The first
known South African diamond was picked up on a beach on the African coast by a
boy who was walking through the sand. This event precipitated a new "diamond
rush" with its roots in that part of the world.
